A 50-minute drive from the Innsbruck Airport will take you to family-friendly ski resort known as Alpbach. Winner of the “Most Beautiful Village in Austria” competition, Alpbach is also a popular tourist destination all year round and is linked by lift to Wildschonau, giving rise to the Ski Juwel ski area.
Long before ski tourism became popular, Alpbach has been frequented by some select British skiers who fell in love with the beautiful village nestled in a pine woodland with a mountainous landscape. The center of the village has a small but grand church as its major landmark and this is surrounded by charming log cabins. The architectural design of the village is strictly guided by a planning bylaw introduced in 1953 so nothing can ruin its appealing alpine aura.
The Wiedersberger Horn with a high point of 2025m has the highest slopes and is the main Alpbachtal skiing. There is a smaller small ski area some 7km away at Reith-im-Alpbachtal and has some of the best feels and for night skiing in Europe. You can also ski around the cable cars going up Schatzsberg for the needed snowy connection and lift to the nearby Wildschonau valley. The combined Alpbachtal-Wildschonau ski area, known as the “Ski Juwel” has about 109km of snowy slope. This is 45 lifts that lead to 70 runs, fair enough skiing experience for tourists as long as the weather conditions are great. The most important pistes are reinforced with artificial snow-making because the ski area is not high. It still requires a good season with cold night time temperatures as well. So, be sure to make enquiries before booking a ski holiday here.

Approximate distances from European cities:
Alpbach is a small village with half a dozen hotels and plenty of guesthouses, the best of which usually get booked up well in advance by returning guests so book early to avoid disappointment. There are free ski buses to ferry guests between the village and the ski lifts (1-3km from Alpbach), but having your own car is definitely an advantage for getting to and from the main ski lifts where ample free parking is available or for getting from Inneralpbach to Alpbach in the evenings.
